I had a bit of a hard time settling into this book, To Memories, Living, and The Future: 20. Having read Bolu Animashaun a few times in the past, I almost knew what to expect.

However, going through the first few pages, I found that I could not define the book. What genre is it? Poetry? An autobiography? A devotional? Philosophy? An inspirational book? What exactly is it? And I came to the striking realization that one book could be all of these and more.

One thing I find interesting about the piece is how it doesn’t presume to be correct in all its deductions. Rather, it bears testament to growth. It documents a process. I believe this was instrumental in the author’s choice of the title: To Memories, Living, and The Future: 20.

Somewhere in those pages, you find the author addressing letters to a different version of himself, from a different time and age. He would sign off with “To becoming…” And that right there, is exactly what I witnessed as I journeyed through the pages — a certain becoming.

To get the most out of this book, one would have to take it one step at a time. Take time to digest every piece of it. Apart from the artistic appeal, there is a lot to be taken away, from lessons to expositions, philosophies, and much more.

My personal favorite is a free verse poem of nine lines, titled “Tribute To Aunty Tinuke.” It struck me in ways I can’t explain. In general, this is a different level to Bolu’s writing. I am honoured to witness this growth, and maybe even contribute to it.

The brilliance with which Bolu writes is intriguing! I particularly love his sweet blend of the Nigerian pidgin, Yorùbá and English.

This book is filled with gems of wisdom, and I would encourage you to stay open-minded in grasping them. Of course, I enjoyed every part of the book, and I am certain that you would too.

Cheers to memory, living and the future!
